2025 Focus – Strategic Leadership (Exodus 18:1-24)
During the annual staff planning retreat the African Enterprise International team held, Dr. Stephen Mbogo shared a devotion from Exodus 18:1-24.
The whole chapter underscores the incredible work of God in the lives of the Israelites, both directly (in reflection upon the miraculous events that happened in Egypt in verse 1) and indirectly (through human interaction as seen in Moses’ and Jethro’s exchange).
The portion of scripture is full of great wisdom, and there is much to take away from it. The following are some of the key points that were picked up from the scripture.
- Importance of Family. Jethro’s visit to Moses highlights the importance of family support. He brought Moses’ wife and sons to him, showing that family can be a source of strength and encouragement.
- Humility in Leadership. Moses was the man God had used to do incredible miracles in Egypt, yet Moses bowed down and kissed his father-in-law, showing respect and humility.
- Strategy. Jethro shared the obvious challenges with Moses but also suggested strategic approaches to the prevailing and foreseeable challenges.
How do these, and many other lessons from this portion of scripture, apply to African Enterprise?
- First, we observe and recognize issues and then strategize how to apply solutions, just like Jethro observed the situation before offering fixes.
- Asking the right questions. As a ministry, we shall surely face challenges along the way. It is essential to seek the correct answers and ask the right questions, just as Jethro asked Moses strategic leadership questions.
- Strategy. We need a clear structure and strategy in everything we do to execute God’s work efficiently.
- Honouring God in the various capacities that we serve. Jethro advised appointing leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. Yet, the standard and criteria for the leadership roles were the same…(verse 21): “But select from the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes.”
One might wonder why God did not just tell Moses this incredible wisdom on strategic leadership, especially since Moses had communion with God. The answer is that God desires us to relate with other human beings. There are lessons God channels to us through other people. God has placed resources and wisdom in the people around us, and through humility, relationship, partnership, and collaboration, we can find answered prayers from the people around us.
